AI Practitioner's Guide Launch

On Thursday Morning 20th April, 2023 at the Fairview Hotel in Nairobi, a collaborative community of practitioners drawn from diverse sectors launched a seminal Artificial Intelligence Practitioners’ Guide. This is an important guide developed by a team drawn from diverse sectors of Government, International Development partners, Academia, NGOs, Local Start-Ups, Civil society, Legal experts, amongst others.

The guide demystifies the topic of Artificial Intelligence in Kenya by providing a critical ethical and legal framework for the practice of AI. It also highlights the critical building blocks of AI as AI infrastructure, data, capacity and skill, investments, and financing.

Our founder Brian Omwenga who was actively involved in the whole process of creation of the guide recognises that “The Practitioner’s Guide exhibits the effectiveness of a community working together. The pursuit of open resources and collaborative sharing within the AI space will ultimately lead to the establishment of Kenya’s AI industry. The guide is an important moment that convened the Community of Practice and shall be recognized as the inception of Kenya’s AI movement!”

Engineering lead Steve Waweru who was also active in the development of the guide celebrated the launch of the AI Practitioners Guide as a significant milestone in the advancement of responsible and ethical artificial intelligence. This “comprehensive resource provides invaluable guidance to practitioners, empowering them to navigate the complex landscape of AI development and deployment with integrity, accountability, and a deep commitment to human-centric values.”

In jubilation after the launch, Dr Faith hailed the event as significant for bringing together different sectors of the Artificial Intelligence community in a very collaborative and productive exercise. “This is very much in line with our organisational goal to participate in a very dynamic community of practice.”
