KenCorpus & AI Governance

The Ethics and Governance Working Group hosted a virtual meeting to discuss the AI Code of Practice in Kenya, developed by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) through its Technical Committee (TC 94). The draft code, which focuses on ethics, risk management, and compliance in AI development, is open for public review for 60 days to gather feedback before its final publication. Key discussions highlighted the absence of AI-specific regulations in Kenya and the role of self-regulation through the voluntary code. The code emphasizes transparency, data privacy, and ethical AI practices, with future plans including a validation workshop and potential certification based on ISO standards. Stakeholders shared insights on how the AI code will impact businesses and startups, aiming to position Kenya as a leader in responsible AI adoption. The meeting was moderated by Mutembei Kariuki and attended by 20 participants, including Mr. Alloys Siaya, Chairman of TC94, and Ms. Monica Okoth from KEBS.
